Kinston's architecture, 1762-1930 : an inventory and history / prepared by Martha A. Dreyer, with Kenneth E. Hill.

Summary:

"Kinston, North Carolina was established in 1762, incorporated in 1826, and reincorporated in 1849. Turning points for the town occurred with Richard Caswell's governorships 1777-1780 and 1784-1787, the coming of the railroad in 1858, the establishment of the tobacco and textile industries in the 1890's, devastating fires in the 1890's, the Great Depression years in the early 1930's and the securing of military bases in the area in the 1940's. Kinston holds a fine collection of vernacular commercial and residential architecture of the late 19th century and early 20th century which are tributes to her designer-builders. This report incorporates essays, graphics, and photographs depicting the development of Kinston and an inventory listing of existing historic buildings"--Abstract, preliminary pages.
