Summary:

The 4th United States Colored Troops regiment saw much action in the eastern theater of operations from late 1863 until mid-1865. Following brief but intensive periods of recruiting and training, the regiment--drawn largely from freedmen and liberated slaves in the Middle Atlantic and New England states--served in Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler's Army of the James, and saw action in the Bermuda Hundred and Richmond-Petersburg campaigns. Author Edward G. Longacre blends his unique insight of political and social history in this new book.
