Summary:

Payne examines the history of the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union (STFU) through the story of white sharecropper and activist Myrtle Lawrence. In September 1939, journalist Priscilla Robertson and photographer Louise Boyle spent ten days documenting Lawrence's life and the harsh and deplorable living and working conditions of white and black sharecroppers in the Arkansas cotton belt.
