‡aThe Motherload, offers a candid and sobering exploration of the journey women undergo as expectant mothers and wives. Hoover, who grew up imagining a life for herself, experienced a series of challenges when she became pregnant. She felt like an imposter, distant from her friends and husband, and suffered from anxiety, fear, guilt, and shame. Her son was born, and she experienced severe postpartum depression. The Motherload is about learning to forgive oneself for not being what they were told they should be and for not loving the way they should. It is a moving and exciting exploration of the unique female experience of constantly grappling with expectation versus reality and rejecting the cultural idea of the mother as a perfect being. |
