The Hatterasman / by Ben Dixon MacNeill ; illustrated by Claude Howell ; edited by John F. Loonam, Jr. ; with new introduction by Philip Gerard.
There is a strip of sand running along the North Carolina coast which is formed into a number of elongated islands. Their history and that of Ocracoke and Hatteras Island in particular possible begins in 1497, to become firmly entrenched in the annals of mariners venturing to the New World one hundrend years later. Of these islands Hatteras emerges as a sentinel watching one of the most dangerous areas in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a spot where the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current meet and where moving shoals, storms, and the whims of the two currents make "this hundrend square miles of water the most treacherous and unpredictable in all the seven seas."
